Virtual Estate Planning

COVID-19 has made us all rethink how we do things. They say that necessity is the mother of invention. In that spirit, The ElderCare Law Firm is now offering virtual estate planning services whereby you can get your customized estate plan without ever leaving the comfort of your home.

We have carefully designed a special process to help you complete your estate plan without exposing yourself to the risks and inconvenience of leaving your home. The virtual estate planning service still follows our four meeting process--Vision, Design, Delivery, and Funding Follow-Up--to make sure you don't miss a thing.

Vision

With virtual estate planning, your Vision Meeting is conducted by state-of-the-art audio and video communication tools that allow us to see and hear each other, share each other’s screens as needed, draw up your planning options on a virtual whiteboard, and share documents back and forth.

Design

At your Design Meeting, we will again use audio and video communication tools to design a graphical blueprint of your plan right before your eyes that will address your unique personal and family situation.

Delivery

At your Delivery Meeting, we will review your estate plan on the screen in front of you. We show you where we have included your specific instructions. If something needs to be changed, we can do it while you watch and give input. When everything is just as you like, our notary will help you execute your plan right on your screen.

Funding Follow-Up

Funding is the process of re-titling assets and changing beneficiary designations so they work properly in relation to your new plan. At your Delivery Meeting, we will agree on a funding plan and make the proper assignments. Later, when the work is done, we can review your work using the tools we have used in other steps of the virtual estate planning process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if I am not good with technology?

That’s ok. We can do a lot to help you or you can have a child, a friend, or even a grandchild help (since these things come naturally to them).

What if I don’t like virtual estate planning, can I just get a traditional service?

Absolutely. So long as we can do the process safely and within government mandates for proper physical distancing, we can do part or all of your plan in person. We have offices in Kaysville and Salt Lake City and do home visits on a case-by-case basis where needed.

Is it safe to sign documents remotely?

Yes, in many ways it is actually safer as we go through a careful process of verifying your identity. It is important, however, that we take proper precautions to make sure you are competent and not being improperly influenced. If anyone is concerned that is happening, we will make the necessary adjustments to prevent that.

What technology do I need for virtual estate planning?

A computer, laptop, or tablet is required for the Delivery Meeting. Otherwise, a smartphone or even just a telephone will suffice.

Besides convenience, what are the other benefits of virtual estate planning?

There are many. Here are just a few:

  • Scheduling is easier and quicker;
  • We can easily include any number of key support persons wherever they live and no matter their circumstances;
  • The process is faster and more efficient;
  • The audio and video tools we use provide an excellent teaching and learning environment;
  • The process eliminates the risk that illness will be spread, especially to vulnerable persons.
